Ariocarpus Retusus

Bring a bold, contemporary look to your plant collection with the Pencil Cactus, botanically known as Euphorbia tirucalli. Despite its common name, it is not a true cactus but a drought-tolerant succulent from the Euphorbia family.

This unusual plant develops clusters of narrow, cylindrical branches that resemble green pencils. New growth may produce tiny leaves near the branch tips, while stronger sunlight can encourage yellow, orange or reddish colouring, giving rise to its popular name, the Firestick Plant.

Its upright, branching shape makes it an attractive statement plant for bright rooms, balconies, rooftops, patios and modern garden arrangements. Young nursery plants remain compact in pots, while mature outdoor specimens can eventually develop into large shrubs or small trees.

Place the plant in bright light or direct morning sun. Gradually acclimatise it before exposing it to intense sunlight to prevent scorching. Use loose, fast-draining cactus or succulent soil and water only after the growing medium has dried completely.

The Pencil Cactus requires little routine maintenance and tolerates dry conditions well. However, overwatering can cause yellowing, weak stems and root rot.

Important: The plant releases a white, milky sap when damaged or cut. This sap can severely irritate the skin and eyes, so keep the plant away from children and pets and wear gloves when handling or pruning it.
