Lobivia Schieliana

Add vivid seasonal colour to your cactus collection with Lobivia Winteriana, a compact flowering cactus also known as the Backeberg Easter Lily Cactus.

This attractive cactus develops a rounded to slightly cylindrical green body with pronounced ribs and evenly arranged areoles. Its short spines may appear pale brown, amber or grey, creating a neat textured appearance. Mature plants can remain solitary or gradually produce offsets around the base to form a small cluster.

The main attraction is its exceptionally large, funnel-shaped flowers. During the warmer growing season, healthy plants may produce brilliant fuchsia-pink, carmine or purple-violet blooms with a contrasting pale or white centre. The flowers can appear especially large compared with the compact cactus body.

Place Lobivia Winteriana in a bright location with several hours of direct morning sun. Strong sunlight supports healthy, compact growth and encourages flowering, but plants should be introduced gradually to intense summer afternoon sun.

Use a fast-draining cactus soil and water thoroughly during active growth only after the soil has dried. During winter, keep the cactus cool and almost completely dry. This dry resting period helps protect it from rot and can encourage better flowering in the following season.

Its compact shape, colourful flowers and relatively simple care requirements make Lobivia Winteriana suitable for decorative pots, sunny balconies, windowsills and specialist cactus collections.

Botanically, Lobivia winteriana is currently treated as a synonym of Echinopsis backebergii subsp. backebergii.
