Product Description

Add a truly distinctive specimen to your cactus collection with Obregonia denegrii, commonly known as the Artichoke Cactus.

This rare cactus forms a compact, flattened rosette made up of thick, triangular tubercles. These overlapping tubercles create its characteristic artichoke-like appearance, giving the plant a sculptural shape unlike most common cacti. Its body is usually grey-green to dark green, while the centre may contain soft white wool and short, delicate spines.

Obregonia denegrii is an exceptionally slow-growing plant and remains compact for many years. Mature specimens may produce small, funnel-shaped white or pale cream flowers from the woolly centre during the warmer growing season.

Place this cactus in bright light with gentle morning sun. Protect it from harsh afternoon sunlight, especially during extremely hot weather, because sudden intense exposure can cause scorching. A position with good airflow and protection from prolonged rain is ideal.

Use a highly porous, mineral-rich cactus soil that drains quickly. Water carefully during active growth, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Keep the plant almost completely dry during winter or periods of dormancy. Overwatering is the main risk and can quickly cause root or body rot.

Because of its slow growth and sensitivity to excess moisture, Obregonia denegrii is better suited to growers with some cactus-care experience. Its unusual structure and rarity make it a valuable addition to specialist collections.

The species is native to northeastern Mexico and is the only accepted species in the genus Obregonia.
