Product Description

Grow a useful and attractive fruiting shrub with Carissa carandas, commonly known as the Karonda Plant. This evergreen plant is valued for its dense foliage, fragrant flowers and colourful edible fruit.

Karonda develops glossy, oval-shaped green leaves on a naturally bushy and branching plant. During the warmer growing season, it may produce clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers with a pleasant fragrance. These are followed by oval berries that usually change from green or pink to red, maroon or dark purple as they mature.

The fruit has a sharp, tangy flavour and is commonly used in pickles, chutneys, preserves, juices and traditional recipes. Fruit production depends on the plant’s maturity, sunlight, pollination and growing conditions, so young nursery plants may require time before producing a full crop.

Carissa carandas grows best in a warm, sunny position and is suitable for gardens, terraces, rooftops and large containers. Its dense, thorny branching habit also makes it useful for informal hedges and boundary planting. Regular pruning can help maintain a compact shape and encourage fuller growth.

Plant it in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Water young plants regularly while they establish, but allow the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings. Mature plants are relatively drought tolerant, although consistent moisture during flowering and fruit development can support healthier growth.

Its evergreen foliage, fragrant blooms and useful fruit make Karonda an excellent addition to home gardens and edible landscapes.
