Product Description

Add a rare miniature specimen to your cactus collection with Frailea castanea, a small South American cactus admired for its flattened shape and naturally dark colouring.

This slow-growing cactus develops a round to slightly flattened body with shallow vertical ribs. Its colour can range from olive green and bronze-green to deep brown or chestnut, especially when exposed to brighter light. Small areoles appear along the ribs and carry very short, fine spines that sit close to the plant’s surface.

Frailea castanea remains extremely compact, making it ideal for small spaces, miniature cactus arrangements, office desks and sunny windowsills. Although mature plants may produce comparatively large yellow flowers, the blooms do not always open fully. The plant can sometimes produce seeds without displaying a completely opened flower.

Place it in bright light with gentle morning sun while protecting it from severe afternoon heat. Since its small body can scorch or dry out more quickly than larger cacti, intense sunlight should be introduced gradually.

Use a highly porous, mineral-rich cactus mix and a pot with proper drainage. Water carefully during active growth after the soil has dried, but do not leave the plant dry for excessively long periods during very hot weather. Keep it mostly dry during winter dormancy.

Frailea castanea is native to southern Brazil and nearby northeastern South American regions. Its unusual colour, tiny size and collector appeal make it a distinctive addition to any cactus collection.
