Pachypodium – Madagascar Palm Succulent

Bring a dramatic architectural look to your plant collection with the Pachypodium Plant, commonly known as the Madagascar Palm.

Despite its common name, Pachypodium is neither a true palm nor a cactus. It is a succulent shrub or small tree that develops a thick trunk for storing water. The trunk is protected by prominent spines, while long green leaves grow near the upper section, creating its distinctive miniature palm-like appearance.

Young Pachypodium plants are well suited to pots and can be displayed on sunny balconies, patios, rooftops, entrances or beside bright windows. As the plant matures, its trunk gradually becomes thicker and more prominent. Exact trunk shape, spine arrangement and leaf width may vary because Pachypodium refers to a genus containing several species.

Place the plant in a warm position with plenty of bright light and several hours of direct sunlight. Introduce young plants gradually to intense summer sun to reduce the risk of leaf scorching.

Use loose, fast-draining cactus and succulent soil. During active growth, water thoroughly and allow the soil to dry before watering again. Reduce watering significantly during winter, particularly when the plant sheds its leaves and becomes dormant.

Seasonal leaf loss is normal and does not necessarily mean the plant is unhealthy. New leaves usually emerge again when warm growing conditions return.

Pachypodium plants are native to Madagascar and parts of southern and tropical Africa. The genus naturally includes thick succulent trunks, visible spines and showy flowers on mature plants.

Important: Pachypodium has sharp spines and may release irritating latex if damaged. Keep it away from children and pets, and wear gloves when handling or repotting it.
